The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has begun selling four essential commodities on Tuesday across the country – and will continue to do so for the next 15 days – on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary.

The four items – Soybean oil, sugar, lentil, and onion – will are sold at fair prices, from trucks, on the open market.

According to the TCB: sugar costs Tk50 per kilogramme, lentil Tk50 per kilogramme, soybean oil Tk80 per litre, and onion Tk35 per kilogramme. A buyer may purchase a maximum of four kilogrammes of sugar, two kilogrammes of lentils and five litres of soybean oil. No mention has been made of limits to onion purchases.

The TCB has been selling onions for the last five months to control the onion market. Now three more items have been added to its sales.

"We have begun these special sales to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," TCB Information Officer Md Humayun Kabir told The Business Standard.

The key cooking ingredients are being sold from 350 trucks at subsidised rates across the country. Of them 50 trucks are selling in Dhaka, 16 in Chattogram, 10 each in every divisional city, and four each in every district town.

The TCB starts truck sales ahead of every Ramadan. This year Ramadan will begin the last week of April.

TCB officials have not reached a decision over merging these special sales with Ramadan ones.

The trucks will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
