Contemporary art exhibition house "Galleri Kaya" started its journey in 2004 through the hands of Goutam Chakraborty, a painter and art connoisseur himself.

"I would not say it has been a long journey for Galleri Kaya as it is just our 16th year of operation. We still have long way to go. Nevertheless, it is a matter of pride that we are able to run a gallery in a country where works of art have so little market value," said Goutam.

"Every journey has its fair share of obstacles, but we were fortunate to have the support of the art community and the media alike- to smoothly sail through our journey," he added.

Since 2014, Galleri Kaya has been celebrating its anniversary with an annual exhibition. Although the gallery was founded on April 28, this year, the pandemic forced them to postpone the event for over three months.

The exhibition started on July 25, marking a prestigious return of art exhibitions in the capital city.

A selection of 103 artworks, done in acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink, charcoal, ceramic, bronze, pastel pencil and mixed media on paper and canvas is being showcased at this exhibition. 42 artists from India and Bangladesh are taking part in this event.

TBS Picks

Out of a collection of 103 artworks, TBS picks four paintings by four artists that stand out.

"The Girl and the Birds" by Ranjit Das

Renowned artist Ranjit Das' five paintings will be showcased in the exhibition, including "The Girl and the Birds," an acrylic on canvas painting, depicting a woman and two birds.

The artist is highly influenced by life and landscape as they are an essential part of our life. "The sky that we see from our window or even the smallest part of nature can be beautifully depicted through colours," he said. The artist used colours such as violet and yellow to represent emotions in his paintings.

"Stitched Together-1" by Fareha Zeba

Artist Fareha Zeba's two paintings will be showcased in the exhibition. "Stitched Together-1"is from Fareha Zeba's series of paintings,

'Stiched together'. According to the artist, this entire series originated from the story of 'Nakshi Kanthar Math' which basically portrays the stories of everyday life.

Describing her artwork, Zeba said, "I got really interested in this book, Nakshi Kanthar Math By Jasimuddin, and tried to express the stories through my paintings in this series. I tried to blend stitch, prints and little colours in my painting."

 "Spring" by Hashem Khan

Veteran artist Hashem Khan's two paintings will be showcased in the exhibition. One of them is called "Spring." The painting, also known as

"Boshonto," was done in acrylic. You can see the amazing use of spring colours like red, yellow, orange, green in this painting.

When asked about the painting, the Ekushey Padak winner said, "This painting is not too abstract to understand. Moreover, I don't want to talk about what I tried to express in the painting, because I believe the interpretation of art should be in the hands of the audience. If an artwork is defined in a hundred way by a hundred people, it is an achievement for the artist in the end."

"Horse and Women-1" by Goutam Chakraborty

Four paintings by Goutam Chakraborty will be featured in the exhibition, one of them being "Horse and Women-1." This painting was done in watercolor and it will move your heart with its use of vibrant colours.

"In this painting, as well as my other recent works, I have frequently used vibrant colours, more than my earlier works. Amid all the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, my paintings are a reflection of what I believe in - a better world."
