Mosquito breeding: DNCC files cases against airport railway station, CAAB, Ashiyan City

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has filed cases against Dhaka airport railway station, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and Ashiyan City authorities for not taking measures against mosquito breeding.

According to a press release by DNCC, the cases were filed after mayor Atiqul Islam inspected the ongoing mosquito repellent crash programme at Uttarkhan and Dakhsinkhan area—region 7 and 8— on the day, said Motakabbir Ahmed, executive magistrate and officer of DNCC region-7, on Monday.

The mayor inspected the areas near the airport railway station, Haji Camp, Ashiyan City and Dakshinkhan Bazar from 8.30am to 12 noon.

During the inspection, the mayor expressed displeasure after discovering garbage, stagnant water and numerous mosquito larvae in a canal adjacent to the railway behind the airport.

Next to the canal, a large quantity of water hyacinth, piles of rubbish, stagnant water and innumerable mosquito larvae was found in an area under CAAB. The same situation was seen in a huge pond surrounded by a boundary wall next to Haji camp. Favourable ground for mosquitoes breeding were found on the opposite side of the Haji camp as well.

Later, Atiqul Islam inspected areas of Ashiyan City adjacent to Haji Camp, where similar situation was seen.

After the inspection, he said, "We've tried to clean up areas that fall under our jurisdiction. Railways and civil aviation should keep their areas clean as well."

"We have informed the civil aviation authorities about the matter previously. Now, we have no other option but to file cases," he added.

Atiqul Islam said, "Railways should clean up their areas. Civil aviation will take responsibility for their lands. City corporation will take responsibility for areas under it. But it seems everyone is operating as they like and we are the one being badmouthed. This cannot continue."

"Now we are going to the court," he added.
