Nusraat Faria’s arrest likely due to nervousness following ex-president Hamid’s foreign travel: Farooki
The cultural affairs adviser says the arrest of actress Nusraat Faria is "an embarrassing incident" and calls for more sensitivity in handling such cases

Actress Nusraat Faria's arrest likely happened due to the nervousness of authorities concerned after many expressed anger over the foreign travel of former president Abdul Hamid, said Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki today (19 May).
He also described Faria's arrest as "an embarrassing incident" and called for more sensitivity in handling such cases.
In a post on his verified Facebook profile at 11:12am today (19 May), Farooki wrote, "I usually try not to speak outside the work of my ministry. But I also have an identity, I was a person from this [entertainment] industry and will return there soon. Nusraat Faria's arrest remains an embarrassing incident for us."
He further stated, "Our government's job is to bring the real culprits of July to justice. Our clear stance on blanket cases is that no one will be arrested if no involvement is found during the preliminary investigation. And that policy was being followed."
Farooki said the case in which Faria is accused was filed a while ago, and it had not come to his notice that any government initiative had been taken to arrest her before the investigation was completed.
"But this incident happened right after going to the airport. Perhaps these incidents are occurring out of nervousness following the anger expressed over the foreign travel of former president Abdul Hamid of the Awami League government.
"A similar incident happened with Barrister Andaleeve Partho's wife a few days ago. These incidents are in no way supportable," he wrote.
"I believe Faria will get legal remedy," he added.
"And I hope we will be able to handle such blanket cases more sensitively. We must remember that our main task is to bring the real culprits of July to justice," wrote the adviser.
Nusraat Faria was detained yesterday (18 May) at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in connection with a case filed at Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court.
The case relates to an attempted murder incident in the capital's Bhatara area during the anti-discrimination movement of 2024. The CMM Court today ordered Faria to be sent to jail and set 22 May for a hearing on her bail plea.
