The Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) recently has strongly condemned cutting down trees and destruction of the overall environment of Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan in the name of development.

The BIP put forward seven recommendations to the authorities, including the policymakers.

In a media release, BIP said the plan to build restaurants and large-scale car parking in the Udyan is a clear violation of the existing natural reservoirs preservation act.

In the proposals, the organisation asked the authorities to stop the work immediately and modify the plan after environmental surveys.

The planners institute urged the authorities to consider the opinions of the urban development committee.

The organisation further asked to take necessary actions against those involved in the Suhrawardy Udyan's development project after proper investigation for engaging in deforestation and damaging the environment.

It also urged the government to take initiative to form a body consisting of professionals to preserve and maintain the parks, playgrounds, and public spaces all over the country.
