ASK condemns police use of force on journalists, DU students at Suhrawardy Udyan
ASK demanded a neutral, transparent and speedy investigation into the incident and called for legal action against the police officials found responsible.
Human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over alleged police use of force on journalists and students of Dhaka University during a recent anti-narcotics drive at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
In a press release issued today (24 February), ASK said police physically assaulted journalists while they were performing their professional duties at the scene according to media reports and videos circulated on social media.
The organisation also stated that despite identifying himself as a university student, an individual was beaten with batons and punched in the presence of a senior police officer.
Describing the incident as a manifestation of "extreme unprofessionalism", ASK said such conduct is contrary to the minimum code of behaviour expected of law enforcement agencies and stressed that under no circumstances can excessive or unreasonable use of force be justified in the name of conducting anti-narcotics operations.
It said obstructing journalists from carrying out their professional responsibilities and engaging in violent behaviour towards students constitute clear violations of citizens' rights and the right to personal security.
ASK demanded a neutral, transparent and speedy investigation into the incident and called for legal action against the police officials found responsible.
It also urged the relevant authorities to issue clear directives to members of the police force to refrain from unexpected and unacceptable conduct such as excessive use of force, and to ensure effective oversight.
ASK said public trust can only be strengthened through adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
It further called on the authorities concerned to ensure accountability in this incident and to take effective measures to prevent recurrence of similar events in the future.
