BSEC launches inquiry into unusual market downturn
The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has initiated an enquiry into the recent unusual and suspicious downturn of the DSEX index, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).
According to an official order issued on 27 April, the capital market regulator observed a sharp fall in the market trend, prompting concerns over possible market manipulation and loss of investor confidence.
The enquiry team, comprising officials from BSEC, the DSE, and the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL), has been tasked with identifying the reasons behind the decline, uncovering individuals involved in spreading rumors, investigating any incidental issues, and recommending measures to restore market stability.
The appointed officers are Mohammad Shamsur Rahman, Additional Director, BSEC; Muhammad Oarisul Hasan Rifat, Deputy Director, BSEC; Mahfuzur Rahman, Assistant General Manager, DSE; and Kazi Minhaz Uddin, Assistant General Manager, CDBL.
The commission has directed the team to complete the enquiry and submit a report within 15 working days of the order's issuance.
The BSEC's move highlights its growing vigilance in ensuring transparency and protecting investors' interests amid volatile market conditions.
