Who could be the next president, speaker?
Speculation grows over BNP's top constitutional picks
With an absolute majority in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the BNP is set to form the next government, marking its return to power after nearly two decades under the leadership of Chairman Tarique Rahman.
As it is widely expected that Tarique will assume the office of prime minister, speculation has grown on who may occupy the posts of president and speaker in the new political arrangement.
According to party sources, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is being considered for the presidency, while Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan is under discussion for the position of speaker of parliament.
Another Standing Committee member, Nazrul Islam Khan, is likely to serve as political adviser to the prime minister, sources said.
Serious discussions on these potential appointments are ongoing within the party.
Before a new cabinet can be sworn in, the Election Commission must publish the official gazette of the election results. Sources at the commission said the gazette is expected to be issued by tomorrow.
Following the publication, the incumbent president will summon the first session of the new parliament, after which oath-taking ceremonies will formally mark the beginning of the new government's tenure.
Newly elected members must take their oath within three days of the gazette's publication.
