BNP hopes to form govt by Sunday: Fakhrul
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir says BNP will go to parliament along with all parties and work to implement its election manifesto and 31-point agenda
The BNP hopes to form government by Sunday (15 February), party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, following its landslide victory in the 13th general election.
Fakhrul spoke to reporters today (13 February) at his residence in Thakurgaon-1, where he has been unofficially declared the winner.
"In all likelihood, the government will be formed by 15 February," he said, adding that the commitments BNP had signed in the July charter would be implemented gradually.
He said the BNP would go to parliament along with all parties and work to implement its declared election manifesto and the 31-point agenda.
Describing the party as one rooted in public support, Fakhrul said, "BNP is a party of the people. The rise of extremism in the country came as a result of fascist forces. Various forms of repression were carried out against political parties. From that situation, Jamaat performed well in the election."
People have already rejected them, and BNP has secured more than a two-thirds majority, he said.
"The people will once again be able to curb all anti-progressive forces through fair, honest, and welfare-oriented politics," he added.
He added that the party views its sweeping victory as a reflection of the people's love and trust.
In line with central party directives, the BNP has requested leaders and supporters to refrain from organising victory processions today (13 February). Instead, the party has called for prayer gatherings to be held in respective localities across the country after Jummah prayers.
