NCP holds meeting with IMF, pledges support for reform agenda
Party representatives said the IMF-recommended measures were “essential for ensuring sustainable development”.
A delegation of the National Citizen Party (NCP) met with the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission team today (14 November) at a hotel in Dhaka, where both sides discussed Bangladesh's macroeconomic challenges, governance reforms and the country's political transition.
According to a media release from the party, the NCP delegation thanked the IMF for what they described as "continued support during this critical period", and for providing a reform roadmap aimed at stabilising the economy.
Party representatives said the IMF-recommended measures were "essential for ensuring sustainable development".
As per the press release, the IMF team raised concerns over slowing GDP growth, weak revenue mobilisation, the low revenue-to-GDP ratio, distressed assets in the banking sector, and rising youth unemployment.
The NCP delegation acknowledged these vulnerabilities and reiterated its commitment to advancing revenue digitalisation and supporting ongoing financial-sector reforms.
The discussion also touched on what NCP termed the "kleptocratic practices of the previous regime", their impact on governance, and the structural safeguards needed to prevent future corruption.
Reducing the size of the informal economy, promoting transparency, and ensuring a smooth transition from the interim government to an elected administration were also highlighted.
Both sides expressed optimism about building a more resilient economy anchored in good governance and the "hard-working people of Bangladesh", the NCP statement said.
The IMF delegation included mission chief for Bangladesh Chris Papageorgiou, Dhaka resident representative Maksym Kryshko, and Tawhid Ilahi, deputy secretary and economic analyst.
Representing the NCP were Joint Convener Javed Rasin, Lead of the Foreign Affairs Cell Sultan Mohammed Zakaria, Joint Member Secretary Alauddin Mohammad and Joint Chief Coordinator Md Abdullah Al Faisal.
