NCP picks mayoral candidates for 5 city corps; Asif for Dhaka South, Adeeb for North
NCP Convener Nahid Islam announced the names of the candidates at a press conference at the party’s central office in Banglamotor in Dhaka tonight (29 March).
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced mayoral candidates in five out of the country's 12 city corporations, centring the upcoming local government elections.
NCP Convener Nahid Islam, who is also the chief whip of the opposition in parliament, announced the names of the candidates at a press conference at the party's central office in Banglamotor in Dhaka tonight (29 March).
Of the five, NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain will contest for mayor in Dhaka South City Corporation, while Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb will run in Dhaka North City Corporation.
Additionally, Advocate Tarikul Islam has been nominated for Cumilla City Corporation, Advocate Md Abdur Rahman Afzal for Sylhet City Corporation, and Md Mobasher Ali for Rajshahi City Corporation.
Earlier, on 1 March, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said preparations for local government elections will begin after Eid and polling will continue throughout the year.
Speaking at an event at the Election Commission building in the capital's Agargaon, Masud said the commission is awaiting the first session of parliament to determine whether local government elections will be held under party symbols or on a non-partisan basis.
