Don't turn into Jamaat generation: Andaleeve to NCP
He said lawmakers must respect both the Constitution and the spirit of July
Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Andaleeve Rahman Partho today (31 March) urged NCP lawmakers in Parliament not to become the "Jamaat generation" while representing Gen Z, during a discussion on a motion to summon the Constitution Reform Council.
The motion, placed in the House by Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, is under Section 62 of the Rules of Procedure and aligns with the July National Charter Implementation Order, 2025.
"You are our heroes. Those who fought in the July uprising are here. You represent Gen Z. You should not become Jamaat generation," Partho said, joining the debate after NCP lawmaker Akhter Hossen (Rangpur-4).
He expressed hope that the NCP would bring positive politics and warned that some political actors were attempting to push the BNP-led alliance against the spirit of the July uprising for political gain a practice he said was also seen during the Awami League regime.
Questioning the formation of the Constitution Reform Council, Partho stressed that the BNP-led alliance intended to operate within the constitutional framework for amendments. Highlighting public support for constitutional changes, he said while around 70% voted "yes" in the referendum, 51% supported the BNP-led alliance in the 13th parliamentary election.
Referring to the July 2024 movement, he said, "You scored 12 runs from six balls. But we scored 300 runs before," underscoring the need for political unity while respecting both the Constitution and the spirit of July.
Earlier, NCP member secretary Akhter Hossen said BNP chairman Tarique Rahman had urged people to vote "yes" in the referendum during a January 30 pre-election rally in Rangpur, the birthplace of July martyr Abu Sayeed, but the party now appeared reluctant to accept the results.
He said ignoring the public verdict is an audacious attempt to stigmatize Parliament, adding, "Whether the Referendum Order is approved by Parliament or not, there is no chance of making the referendum illegal."
The discussion also included other leaders, such as Ashraf Uddin Bakul, MP for Narsingdi-5, former interim government adviser Farida Akhter, former CPB general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Haq, and labour rights activist Taslimah Akhter. Before the discussion, CAB presented its 13-point demands aimed at ensuring good governance and energy justice in the power and energy sector.
