USA Ambassador visits Chattogram Port as US wheat shipment arrives
Brent T Christensen, United States ambassador to Bangladesh, visited Chattogram Port to underscore commercial cooperation and strengthen bilateral trade ties between Bangladesh and the United States.
On 26 January, 2026, Ambassador Christensen joined Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, and Md Firoz Sarker, secretary of the Ministry of Food, to mark the arrival of nearly 60,000 metric tonnes of US wheat at the port.
The shipment is part of a larger consignment exceeding 173,000 metric tonnes, comprising nearly 115,000 metric tonnes of soft white wheat sourced from Washington, Oregon and Idaho, and almost 60,000 metric tonnes of hard red winter wheat from Montana and Nebraska.
Together, the consignments represent a significant supply of high-protein, nutritious grain at a time when Bangladesh produces only about 13 percent of its annual wheat consumption domestically. The deliveries also reflect Bangladesh's growing importance as a key market for American agricultural exports.
In July 2025, the Ministry of Food signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US Wheat Associates, the trade association nominated by the United States Department of Agriculture, to purchase up to 700,000 metric tonnes of US wheat annually until 2030.
Under the MoU, Bangladesh has purchased approximately 660,000 metric tonnes of US wheat in three sales from international commodity trader AgroCorp, with more than 350,000 metric tonnes already delivered.
The agreement supports American agricultural exports while ensuring a stable supply of nutritious wheat for Bangladesh, contributing to food security and strengthening long-term trade relations between the two countries.
