Radiant marks women’s day with discussion on women’s kidney health
To mark International Women's Day 2026, Radiant Pharmaceuticals Limited organised a special discussion titled "Women in Nephrology" at the InterContinental Dhaka on 8 March.
Seven leading female nephrologists from across Bangladesh participated in the event and discussed key aspects of women's kidney health. Professor Dr Asia Khanam, former chair of the Department of Nephrology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, attended as chief guest.
In her remarks, Professor Dr Asia Khanam said kidney disease is often described as a "silent killer" because visible symptoms may not appear until nearly half of kidney function has been lost. She emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups and increased public awareness.
Dr Farnaz Nabi Rima, assistant professor at the Kidney Foundation, highlighted the importance of controlling blood pressure, maintaining fluid and salt balance, and taking proper care of the kidneys for overall health. Dr Selina Akhter, consultant at Continental Hospital PLC, noted that recurrent urinary tract infections should not be ignored, as they may lead to chronic kidney disease over time.
Addressing pregnancy-related risks, Dr Madhavi Karmakar, assistant professor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said some pregnancy complications can result in serious conditions, such as kidney failure, if not treated promptly. Dr Mehruba Alam Ananya, associate professor at BIRDEM, added that kidney failure may cause severe complications during pregnancy and put the unborn child at risk.
Dr Marjoa Humaira Mekhla, consultant at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, noted that hormonal changes after menopause can significantly increase the risk of chronic kidney disease in women, making regular health screening particularly important during this period. Dr Naureen Amin, consultant at LabAid Gulshan, warned that taking medicines, including painkillers, without medical advice can harm the kidneys in the long term.
The speakers said ensuring women's health also strengthens the well-being of families and society. They called for greater awareness of kidney disease prevention, early diagnosis, and equal access to treatment, while emphasising the growing contribution of female nephrologists in Bangladesh.
Samia Naz moderated the session on behalf of Radiant Pharmaceuticals Limited.
