Postal Department responds to misleading claims regarding GPO Building
Recently, a letter from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works claiming that the "GPO building is abandoned and unused" has been submitted to the Principal Advisor, arguing that it is an extension of the Bangladesh Secretariat and a proposal to include it in the Secretariat's Master Plan and transfer it has been submitted.
We would like to firmly state that this information is entirely false, misleading, and purposeful. The GPO Compound is a KPI-listed facility declared by the government. Twenty-four operational offices of the Postal Department are actively carrying out their activities in this compound. Thousands of people receive postal services from here every day.
This centre, which provides uninterrupted services to the postal department's officers and employees, has never been abandoned. As long as civilisation exists, postal services will continue to exist; they will not be abandoned. Although the office of the Director General of the Postal Department has been relocated to the Postal Building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, other operational offices are continuing to operate in the GPO Compound as before.
We express our deep concern and strong condemnation for issuing such a letter without consulting the Postal Department and presenting it to the Chief Advisor. Today, all the officers and employees of the Postal Department in Dhaka gathered at the GPO building to protest against this unjust decision.
The GPO building is not just a building; it is the lifeblood of nearly 40,000 officials and employees of the Postal Department, a symbol of their pride and heritage. We consider any attempt to conspiratorially take away this building as a direct blow to the country's postal service.
All levels of the postal department strongly request that this proposal be immediately cancelled and that full consultation and consent be obtained before any such decision is made in the future.
