Tarique Rahman pays homage to martyrs of Liberation War at National Memorial
Around midnight, the BNP leader reached his Gulshan residence.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar tonight (26 December), a day after returning to the country following nearly 17 years abroad.
Tarique Rahman, accompanied by senior party leaders, proceeded to the altar of the martyrs at 10:04pm. There, he and the party leaders observed a one-minute silence to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs of the Liberation War, reports our correspondent.
According to the BNP Media Cell, Tarique then signed the National Memorial's visitors' book at 10:37pm.
He then left the memorial premises under tight security. Around midnight, the BNP leader reached his Gulshan residence.
Hundreds of BNP supporters lined the roads to catch a glimpse of Tarique Rahman, crowding the route from Zia Udyan to the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.
After visiting the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, he set off for the National Memorial around 5pm,
Earlier in the afternoon, Tarique reached Ziaur Rahman's grave around 4:45pm, where he placed a wreath, offered fateha, and joined a prayer session seeking the salvation of his father's soul, the early recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, and the welfare of the country and its people.
Senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of the party's Standing Committee, were present.
Following the prayers, Tarique departed for Savar. From Zia Udyan to the Savar-bound route, large crowds of party leaders and supporters lined both sides of the roads, eager to catch a glimpse of him. Many waved party flags, held banners and posters, and chanted slogans as his convoy passed.
According to the BNP's verified media cell Facebook page, supporters had begun gathering from early morning in and around Zia Udyan and adjacent areas to welcome their leader.
Earlier, Tarique left his Gulshan residence around 2:54pm in a red-and-green decorated bus under tight security. Due to the massive presence of supporters along the route, it took him nearly one hour and 51 minutes to reach Ziaur Rahman's grave.
Throughout the journey, he waved to supporters from inside the bus.
Security was tightened across Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, with additional law enforcement personnel deployed at key points. Checkposts were set up at entry routes, while party volunteers assisted in crowd management as thousands continued to gather near Zia Udyan and the Parliament complex.
