PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries wins Green Factory Award 2025

As part of the government's ongoing efforts to promote environmentally friendly industrialisation, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure sustainable development, PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Ltd (PHP SBRIL) has been honoured with the Green Factory Award 2025.

The award was presented on Tuesday at a ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, organised by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. PHP Family Chairman and Ekushey Padak recipient Alhaj Sufi Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, along with Managing Director Md Zahirul Islam Rinku, received the award on behalf of the company.

This year, 30 companies from various sectors—including garments, textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, food processing, steel, ship-breaking, and shipbuilding—were recognised for their commitment to sustainable practices, energy efficiency, waste management, and improved workplace conditions.

Founded in November 2000, PHP SBRIL has established itself as one of Bangladesh's leading environmentally responsible ship recycling companies. Operating under the PHP Family's philosophy of Happiness, Peace, and Prosperity, the company is dedicated to sustainable growth, labour safety, and environmental protection. It employs 277 workers and complies with global standards, including the Hong Kong Convention 2009 and ILO labour safety guidelines.

PHP SBRIL has recycled several globally certified green vessels, including Ore Vitoria from Brazil's Vale in 2018 and Japan's NYK Line's MV KAMO in 2023—Bangladesh's first direct ship recycling project with Japan. The company maintains strict protocols, including asbestos and hazardous waste management, a zero-discharge policy, and a comprehensive Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM).

The award ceremony was attended by Brigadier General (Retd) Dr Shakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, as chief guest. Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, was present as special guest, with AHM Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, in the chair. Inspector General Omar Md Imrul Mohsin of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments also spoke at the event.

Among other awardees were Dhaka Textile, Ecotex, Fakir Fashion, Tarasima Apparels, Auko Tex, and Square Fashions in garments; Akij Textile, Pioneer Denim, KDS Textile Mills, and Four H Dyeing and Printing in textiles; Transcom Electronics, Fair Electronics, and Walton Hi-Tech Industries in electronics; Akij Food and Beverage and Habiganj Agro in food and beverages; Zerin Tea Garden and Mirzapur Tea Garden in tea; Pragoti Industries in automobiles; Adzi Trims in accessories; Shoeniverse Footwear in leather; Karupannya Rangpur in jute; X Ceramics in tiles; Remark HB and Square Toiletries in cosmetics; SK+F Pharmaceuticals in pharmaceuticals; KR Ship Recycling Yard in ship-breaking; Khulna Shipyard in shipbuilding; BSRM Steels in steel; and Seven Circle Bangladesh in cement.

These awards reflect the government's emphasis on transforming industries to align with international environmental standards and sustainable growth models.
