Nagad pays Tk18.56cr revenue share to Directorate of Posts
Mobile financial service provider Nagad paid Tk18.56 crore to the Directorate of Posts as its revenue share for FY2025–26, up 34% year-on-year.
The payment rose by Tk4.74 crore from Tk13.82 crore in the previous fiscal year, according to a press release.
Bangladesh Bank-appointed Nagad Administrator Md Motasem Billah handed over the cheque to Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam, MP, at a ceremony at Daak Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon on Wednesday.
Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Bilquis Jahan Rimi, Director General of the Directorate of Posts Kazi Asadul Islam, and senior officials from both organisations attended the ceremony.
Fakir Mahbub Anam said Nagad played an important role in maintaining competition in the mobile financial services market.
"Without Nagad, there will be a monopoly in the market, and we will not allow that to happen. Nagad must maintain a competitive market and become even more profitable," he said.
The minister urged journalists not to heed rumours about Nagad, saying digital transactions were essential to improving access to financial services for people in remote areas, students and the wider population.
"People know Nagad is a state-backed institution. Therefore, we must move forward with Nagad through essential activities and services," he added, inviting continued support for Nagad.
Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Bilquis Jahan Rimi said the government had earned substantial revenue through Nagad and would explore further opportunities for collaboration between the operator and the Directorate of Posts.
Kazi Asadul Islam said Nagad had challenged the perception that state-owned entities could not operate profitably.
"We have disproven that narrative through Nagad and demonstrated that government services can indeed be profitable," he said.
Since its inception, Nagad has paid around Tk946 crore in taxes to the government and Tk47 crore in revenue shares to the Directorate of Posts, taking its total contribution to the government to nearly Tk1,000 crore, according to the release.
Md Motasem Billah said Nagad had contributed significantly to bringing marginalised people into the formal financial system through technology.
Besides promoting innovation, the operator protected consumer interests by strengthening market competition and continued to generate revenue for the government, he added.
Under the partnership agreement, Nagad Limited bears all capital and operating expenses, including the cost of technological infrastructure, while the Directorate of Posts makes no financial investment.
After specified allowable operating expenses are deducted from total revenue, the Directorate of Posts receives 51% of the net proceeds, and Nagad retains 49%.
Before the latest payment, Nagad had disbursed approximately Tk28.5 crore in revenue shares to the Directorate of Posts. The new payment brings the cumulative amount to around Tk47 crore.
In March, Nagad paid Tk13.82 crore for the 18 months from January 2024 to June 2025. Earlier payments included Tk5.51 crore in 2024 and Tk4.50 crore in 2022.
The operator also paid Tk313 crore in VAT and other taxes during the first 11 months of FY2025–26, the release said.
Nagad processed transactions worth Tk4.27 lakh crore during FY2025–26, marking 25.5% growth from Tk3.40 lakh crore in the preceding fiscal year.
Its active customer base surpassed three crore as of June, including more than 2.25 crore app users. The company now processes transactions averaging more than Tk 1,500 crore per day.
Nagad, which began operations in March 2019, said it had contributed to Bangladesh's digital financial ecosystem by expanding financial inclusion among underserved communities.
