Major General Sahedul Islam takes charge as BGMEA secretary general
Major General Dr Md Sahedul Islam (retd) has formally assumed office as secretary general of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the country's apex trade body for the readymade garment sector.
Major General Sahedul Islam, ndc, hdmc, psc, PhD, MPhil, brings more than 35 years of experience in military leadership, international diplomacy and academia.
While serving as defence attaché in Washington, DC, he was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit by the United States.
He earned a PhD from the University of Dhaka for his research on assessing and developing workers' skills. He also holds an MPhil and an MBA from the university, as well as a master's degree in management studies from Osmania University in India.
Major General Sahedul Islam previously served as a dean at Bangladesh University of Professionals and as treasurer and professor at the Central University of Science and Technology. He also played key roles in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
BGMEA leaders expressed hope that his expertise, diplomatic experience and innovative leadership would help sustain the growth of Bangladesh's garment industry, develop a skilled workforce and address emerging global challenges.
Major General Sahedul Islam said he was delighted to join BGMEA, the leading organisation representing the sector that drives Bangladesh's economy.
He pledged to work closely with the BGMEA board and garment entrepreneurs to navigate global economic challenges, diversify products and markets, strengthen workforce skills and consolidate Bangladesh's position in the international market.
