Local govt bodies urged to help maintain law and order: Advisor

Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor to the interim government's Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said that institutions at all levels of the local government department, law enforcement agencies and the public must take appropriate steps to eliminate the law-and-order situation that has arisen.

The advisor said this while speaking as the chief guest at the National Local Government Day 2025 celebration organised by the Local Government Department at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today (Tuesday).

The advisor also said that controlling the law-and-order situation presents many challenges, which must be addressed through collective efforts. He also mentioned that elections should be held quickly, at least in city corporations and municipalities, to reduce citizen suffering. The advisor emphasised dynamism in citizen services and a strict stance against corruption.

The local government advisor said that along with institutional reforms, we must reform our thoughts, consciousness, and behaviour. After the July Uprising 2024, the people of Bangladesh want to see positive changes in all areas. But still, many political leaders are making embarrassing statements. The advisor believes political leaders' statements should be more elegant and polite.

Dr. Tofail Ahmed, Head of the Local Government Reform Commission, was the event's special guest. Md. Nizam Uddin, Secretary of the Local Government Department, chaired the event, and A.K.M. Tariqul Alam, Additional Secretary (Administration) of the Local Government Department, delivered a welcome speech. Officers/employees of the Local Government Department institutions were also present.
