Khaleda Zia remembered as founder of National University
National University vice-chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah has described Begum Khaleda Zia as a steadfast leader who played a significant role in the struggle to establish democracy in Bangladesh.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, the vice-chancellor stated that Begum Khaleda Zia consistently raised her voice against authoritarianism and worked to safeguard the country's sovereignty through an uncompromising political struggle.
He stated that her contributions would be remembered with honour, adding that her name would remain an important part of Bangladesh's political history for her role in restoring and strengthening democratic institutions.
Professor Amanullah also highlighted Begum Khaleda Zia's contribution to the education sector, noting that she established the National University in 1992 with the aim of expanding access to quality higher education. At present, the university accounts for around 70 percent of the country's higher education enrolment, with about 2,500 colleges and institutions affiliated nationwide, he stated.
He added that, in line with her vision, the current administration of the National University is placing emphasis on curriculum reform and work-oriented education to better prepare students for the employment market.
The vice-chancellor stated that the university administration is working to honour Begum Khaleda Zia as the founder of the National University, the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and the second female prime minister in the Muslim world.
"All teachers, officers and employees of the National University are deeply saddened by her death," the statement read.
Professor Amanullah prayed for the eternal peace of her soul and extended condolences to her bereaved family.
