Integrated planning key to strengthening agriculture, fisheries, livestock: Minister
Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Minister Mohammad Amin-ur Rashid today said agriculture, fisheries and livestock are the key pillars of the country's economy, and that integrated planning and effective implementation across the three sectors can make the overall economy stronger and more sustainable.
He made the remarks at a views-exchange meeting with officials at the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock this afternoon.
The minister said the prime minister places the highest priority on agricultural development and believes a stronger agriculture sector will stabilise the core economy. He noted that many countries remain covered in ice for six to eight months a year, yet have become developed nations, while Bangladesh has the opportunity to produce crops year-round. He said favourable weather and fertile land are major assets, and urged all stakeholders to work together to build a better and more prosperous country.
Referring to the country's food culture, Amin-ur Rashid said rice and fish are inseparable from Bengali identity and tradition, adding that Bangladesh must reach a respected position globally in agricultural production through coordinated efforts of experienced officials and experts. He said the government is committed to public welfare and is working to meet people's expectations, and also highlighted the strong potential for exporting agricultural products by leveraging the country's climate and natural resources.
He said the government is ready to extend support, but the desired outcomes cannot be achieved without sincere cooperation from officials. He added that it is possible to create a landmark achievement through collective work by ensuring a corruption-free and professional workplace.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salauddin Tuku said a democratic government has been formed through a credible election and public expectations are high. He said the government is committed to performing its duties with integrity and dedication, taking lessons from past limitations in state management.
He said the country's canals, wetlands, rivers and waterbodies are the main reservoirs of fisheries resources, but many have been filled up or grabbed for various reasons, which he described as a matter of concern. He said steps should be taken to identify, recover and conserve such waterbodies.
The state minister said the ministry would provide maximum support if officials and employees perform their duties properly, adding that development requires mutual understanding and combined efforts. He expressed hope that detailed action plans would be developed through sector-wise meetings in the future, and reiterated that the prime minister prioritises agriculture, believing agricultural development is the main driver of sustainable economic growth.
Abu Taher Muhammad Jaber, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, along with senior officials from the ministry and its departments and agencies, were present.
