IDCOL, tea association discuss solar plants in Sylhet and Chattogram estates
Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and the Bangladesh Tea Association have discussed plans to establish solar power plants on unused land within tea estates in Greater Sylhet and Chattogram.
The meeting, chaired by Association Chairman Kamran T Rahman, was held on 20 November at the Association's office in Mohakhali DOHS. IDCOL's Executive Director and CEO Alamgir Morshed, Head of Renewable Energy Md Enamul Karim Pavel, and Head of Technical Unit (Renewable Energy) Mohammad Wahidur Rahman attended, along with Association representatives Wahidul Haque, Ziaul Ahsan, Mustafizur Rahman and Dr Kazi Muzaffar Ahmed.
The discussion highlighted the potential use of roughly 284 acres of unutilised tea-garden land for solar installations. The Association requested IDCOL to conduct site assessments across selected estates.
Alamgir Morshed said, "IDCOL will work closely with tea estates to tap the solar power potential and remains committed to accelerating Bangladesh's transition to clean energy through financing renewable energy, energy efficiency and infrastructure projects."
IDCOL has financed 192MW of rooftop solar projects nationwide and 271MW across six large solar plants. As a key national channel for domestic and international climate finance, it supports initiatives backed by the World Bank, KfW, USAID, JICA and the GCF.
The organisation said such investments will support Bangladesh's Nationally Determined Contributions and renewable-energy targets, contributing to a greener and more resilient energy future.
