IDCOL, BUET unveil joint ICS lab to boost clean cooking innovation
Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and the Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have jointly inaugurated the IDCOL–DChE, BUET ICS Laboratory on 27 October 2025 at the BUET campus in Dhaka.
Attendees included Alamgir Morshed, Executive Director and CEO of IDCOL; Md Enamul Karim Pavel, Head of Renewable Energy at IDCOL; Professor Dr Shoeb Ahmed, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, BUET; and Professor Dr Md Mominur Rahman, as well as faculty members, students and senior officials from both institutions.
The newly established laboratory will assess particulate and gaseous air pollutant emissions, energy efficiency, safety, and durability of cookstoves in accordance with the ISO 19867-1:2018 harmonised laboratory test protocols for clean cookstoves and cooking solutions.
The collaboration between IDCOL and BUET seeks to address the growing demand for a globally recognised testing and certification facility. Once ISO-certified, the laboratory will enable carbon credit registration for clean cooking projects in Bangladesh—opening new opportunities for climate finance and sustainable innovation.
This initiative marks a key milestone within IDCOL's Improved Cook Stove (ICS) Programme, which works to reduce indoor air pollution, improve public health and lower carbon emissions. Since its inception in 2013, the programme has distributed more than four million improved cookstoves to rural households nationwide.
"The inauguration of this laboratory signifies a pivotal step towards providing cleaner, safer, and more efficient cooking solutions for countless households," said Alamgir Morshed. "It underscores our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and climate resilience."
Professor Shoeb Ahmed added, "We take pride in partnering with IDCOL to establish this vital facility. Beyond testing and certification, the laboratory will foster research and skills development in clean energy technologies."
IDCOL reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Bangladesh's clean energy transition through partnerships with academia, development partners, and the private sector.
