Eastern University defeats DU law team to clinch jessup 2026 national title
The moot court team of Eastern University emerged champion at the final round of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2026 Bangladesh Qualifying Round, defeating the moot court team of the Department of Law, University of Dhaka.
With the victory, Eastern University also qualified for the international rounds of the competition and will once again represent Bangladesh on the global stage.
The champion team included Sakib Khandaker as researcher, Zarin Sadaf Lopa and Parisha Mehezabin as oralists, and Md Sakib Sarkar as additional researcher. The team was coached by ABM Imdadul Haque Khan and Md Omar Faruq Tamim.
The team secured the national title through rigorous legal research, well-structured arguments and confident courtroom advocacy.
To mark the achievement, Eastern University organised a felicitation programme yesterday at its Rezakul Haider Hall, where the team was honoured with a red-carpet reception.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Farid Ahmed Sobhan, Treasurer Professor Md Shamsul Huda and Registrar Dr Abul Bashar Khan congratulated the team at the event. Teachers and students from the Department of Law, along with heads of various academic departments, were also present.
This year's national round saw participation from forty-eight law schools across the country, making it the largest Jessup national competition in South Asia and the third largest in the world.
Of the ten Bangladesh Qualifying Rounds held so far, Eastern University has qualified for the international rounds six times, including four championship titles and two runners-up finishes—underscoring the institution's consistent success in mooting.
The Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world's largest and most prestigious moot court competition for law students and is widely known as the "World Cup of Mooting".
The Bangladesh Qualifying Round of Jessup 2026 was organised jointly by Jessup Bangladesh and the International Law Students Association Bangladesh Chapter, in collaboration with HART Bangladesh, Conrad Adenauer Stiftung and American International University-Bangladesh. The competition was held in Bangladesh for the tenth consecutive year.
