DBL ceramics transforms factory waste into classroom chalk

DBL Ceramics has launched an innovative sustainability project entitled 'TileChalk', transforming factory residue sludge—previously treated as industrial waste—into classroom chalk for underprivileged schools across Bangladesh.
Traditionally, chalk was made from organic materials and widely used in schools before plastic-based whiteboards and markers became the norm. As Bangladesh ranks among the world's top plastic-polluting countries, this initiative offers a meaningful alternative that not only reduces waste but also promotes eco-friendly education.
DBL Ceramics has long been known for its commitment to sustainability—operating water treatment plants that recycle 100 per cent of wastewater and adopting zero-waste manufacturing practices. During its recycling process, the company identified a by-product sludge that could not be safely disposed of in landfill due to potential soil and water contamination.
Instead of discarding it, DBL Ceramics repurposed the residue. After six months of research and collaboration with chalk manufacturers, the sludge was refined into safe, durable and affordable chalk sticks.
The first batch of 10,000 TileChalk packets has already been distributed through partner NGOs, reaching over 1,000 underserved schools across the country. In addition, broken tiles were upcycled into lightweight slats, reviving a sustainable classroom practice from the past. Together, these innovations reduce waste while promoting environmentally responsible education.
'Education should never harm the environment', said a DBL Ceramics spokesperson. 'With TileChalk, we have turned waste into a resource that helps children learn while protecting the planet'.
In a remarkable step towards industry-wide collaboration, DBL Ceramics has made the TileChalk formula open source and invited other manufacturers to adopt the same practice.
The initiative has already gained attention from schools, NGOs and media outlets for combining sustainability with social good. By giving new purpose to industrial waste, DBL Ceramics continues to prove that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand—shaping a greener, smarter future for Bangladesh.
