BSTI opens state-of-the-art solar panel testing laboratory in Dhaka
To strengthen the country's renewable energy sector and ensure the use of quality solar panels, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Solar Panel Testing Laboratory at its headquarters today (Wednesday, 5 November 2025).
Md Obaidur Rahman, secretary of the Ministry of Industries, attended the event as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the facility. The ceremony was presided over by SM Ferdous Alam, director general (Grade-1) of BSTI. Senior officials from the Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Bangladesh Power Development Board, SREDA, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, DPDC, DESCO, RAJUK, and BSTI were also present.
The industries secretary said the laboratory will play a vital role in ensuring the quality of imported and locally manufactured solar panels in line with international standards. "This advanced facility will open a new horizon for the renewable energy sector and encourage the wider use of environment-friendly energy. By establishing this lab, BSTI will be able to maintain global standards in solar power generation, thereby ensuring consumer protection," he said.
BSTI Director General SM Ferdous Alam said, "Every solar panel used in Bangladesh should be tested, certified, and sustainable so that the nation is illuminated by quality solar energy. Today's inauguration is not merely a technological achievement, but a reflection of our national commitment to a clean, sustainable, and energy-independent Bangladesh."
The laboratory's core technology has been sourced from a renowned German company. At its heart lies a High Precision Standard Sun Simulator, capable of measuring solar module efficiency with exceptional accuracy. The facility can test solar modules of up to 2,700mm × 1,600mm in size — a capacity unique to BSTI in Bangladesh.
