Brac University inaugarates Ayesha Abed women's cricket tournament

In a landmark event celebrating the talent and spirit of women in sports, BRAC University hosted the inaugural Ayesha Abed Memorial Women's Cricket Tournament 2025 at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka.
Ayesha Hasan Abed was a revered social worker, organiser, and visionary who, alongside Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, passionately transformed lives in poverty during BRAC's formative years. Her legacy of compassion and empowerment continues to inspire and uplift others.
The day-long tournament, held on August 20 at the university's Multipurpose Hall, was hosted by the Sports and Fitness Department with support from the student club Cricket BRAC University. Five teams participated: Protidondi, Oporajita, Durjoyee, Ognikonna, and Jagoroni.
In the final match, Team Durjoyee defeated Ognikonna by 9 wickets while chasing 99 runs in 6 overs, clinching the Champions Trophy. The trophy was handed over by Registrar David Dowland.
The runner-up trophy was also presented, along with three individual awards: Best Player of the Final, Best Player of the Tournament, and Most Sixes Award.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shaharear Sayeed, Director of the Human Resources Department, enthusiastically expressed hope for even greater sporting synergy, sharing plans to explore a match between the BRAC University women's cricket team and North South University.
Sadia Hamid Kazi, chairperson and associate professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, encouraged the players to maintain their enthusiasm for sports with pride, applauding their ability to balance athletic and academic excellence.
Professor Shaila Sultana, director of the BRAC Institute of Languages, noted that the level of encouragement for women in sports today is quite different from what she experienced in her early years. She called on the players to carry forward the spirit of womanhood and aim for a place at the national level.
Nausheen Ahmed, Head of Internal Audit and Compliance, encouraged the participants to continue facing challenges bravely and never lose heart.
Jewel Datta, senior manager of the Sports and Fitness Department, expressed optimism and excitement that a wider inter-university women's cricket tournament could soon unite even more talent and celebration.
