BRAC Bank launches drive to plant 25,000 trees nationwide
BRAC Bank has launched a nationwide initiative to plant 25,000 trees as part of its 25th anniversary, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The programme, aligned with World Environment Day and the government's national tree plantation campaign, aims to expand green spaces and support Bangladesh's climate adaptation efforts.
BRAC Bank said the plantation initiative is expected to sequester around 500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next decade, helping offset emissions and support healthier communities.
The programme will cover 14 key locations and include 117 tree species, comprising native, rare, endangered, medicinal, fruit-bearing, flowering, timber and climate-resilient varieties.
The campaign began with the planting of 2,000 saplings at Jahangirnagar University on 19 May, 2026.
According to BRAC Bank, the initiative has been designed to go beyond ceremonial plantation activities by focusing on biodiversity, ecological sustainability and long-term tree survival.
Selected species include 30 rare and endangered varieties, 55 flowering species, 20 timber species, eight fruit-bearing species and eight medicinal varieties.
The project aims to support wildlife, improve soil quality, increase groundwater retention and enhance carbon storage. It will also prioritise native trees threatened by urbanisation and deforestation.
BRAC Bank Managing Director and CEO Tareq Refat Ullah Khan said, "As the country's leading bank, we aim to transform unused spaces into green ecosystems benefiting communities, education and biodiversity. As climate challenges intensify, we demonstrate private-sector action to build a more resilient, greener Bangladesh."
The bank said it will ensure the survival of the planted trees through structured monitoring. Tarupallab and partner institutions will provide quarterly updates, while BRAC Bank's regional officials will supervise the sites.
The programme will be implemented in partnership with universities, colleges and public organisations across the country.
The partner institutions include Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Cumilla University, Barisal University, Leading University Sylhet, Metropolitan University, Noakhali University of Science and Technology, Carmichael College, Dhaka Alia Madrasa, Jamalpur Medical College, Noakhali Medical College, Khulna District Jail, Prokriti Shongrokkhon JonoUddog at Jamalpur, and Netrokona University.
