Bankers' association condemns assault on Islami Bank officer, demands arrest of perpetrators
The incident occurred around 11:30am while Omar Faruk was having tea at a roadside stall near Islami Bank's Motijheel office
Jatiyatabadi Bankers' Association, Bangladesh (JABAB) has condemned the assault, intimidation and harassment of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC Principal Officer and JABAB Central Committee Joint Convener Md Omar Faruk, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.
In a press release issued today (1 June), JABAB Convener Md Iqbal Hossain and Member Secretary Md Mostafizur Rahman Mostak alleged that Omar Faruk was physically assaulted and threatened by a group of individuals in Motijheel earlier in the day.
According to the statement, the incident occurred around 11:30am while Omar Faruk was having tea at a roadside stall near Islami Bank's Motijheel office.
JABAB claimed that a group of 20 to 25 people, led by Shahin Ahmed Khan, a former ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Paltan thana unit and a current member of the party's Dhaka South executive committee, approached Faruk and questioned his identity.
The association said Faruk showed his official bank identification card and introduced himself as a bank officer.
However, the group became aggressive, created a mob situation, physically harassed him and threatened him with serious consequences if he disclosed the incident.
JABAB leaders strongly protested the incident and urged authorities to arrest those involved.
They warned that if action is not taken, bankers across the country could launch a tougher movement against what they described as "mob rule" and intimidation targeting banking professionals.
