Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed has requested the United Nations (UN) to provide Covid-19 vaccines for Bangladeshi peacekeepers serving in UN-supervised mission areas.

General Aziz made the request while exchanging views with senior UN officials on the importance of providing vaccines to peacekeepers deployed in peacekeeping missions, during his visit to the UN headquarters in New York, USA, said a press release issued by ISPR on Tuesday.

At the same time, he assured the UN that newly deployed peacekeepers from Bangladesh will be vaccinated for Covid-19 before their deployment to their respective mission areas.

According to the media release, Bangladesh is the first, among the countries sending peace keeping contingents to DR Congo in 2021, to vaccinate its peacekeepers with Covid-19 vaccines and then deploying them to their respective mission areas.

Most recently, similar vaccines used in Bangladesh (AstraZeneca) have been administered to Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the mission areas under the supervision of the United Nations.

At present a total of 6885 Bangladeshi peacekeepers, including 5308 Bangladesh army personnel, are deployed in 08 peacekeeping missions under the United Nations.
