Bastion roars in Kuril at Putin's behest
Russia-Japan tensions have been heightened by the recent exercise of Russia's Bastion missile system in the Kuril Islands, which followed Putin's visit. The nearly eight-decade dispute between the two countries over the Kuril Islands, as well as the war in Ukraine and Japan's anti-Russian stance, have further complicated the situation. However, Japan is not on the path to direct war right now. Tokyo's dependence on Russia for energy security is also a major weakness, so for now it has to move forward with diplomatic protests and strengthening defenses.
