Ziaur Rahman to be stripped of ‘Bir Uttam’ title

The Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (Jamuka) has decided to cancel the title of 'Bir Uttam' of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman citing Bangabandhu's assassination.
If Ziaur Rahman's title is revoked after almost 50 years of independence, all their state facilities will also be revoked, reports the Somoy News.
The decision was taken at the 72nd meeting of Jatiya Muktijoddha Council held at the Scout Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday (9 February).

Besides, the name of Khandaker Mushtaq will also be dropped from the list of memorable people, which people got for their important contribution to the war of liberation.
At the same time, it has been recommended to cancel the state titles of Bangabandhu's self-confessed murderers Shariful Haque Dalim, Nur Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Mosleh Uddin.
The title of 'Bir Uttam', Bir Bikram' and 'Bir Pratik' was attached to the name of Shariful Haque Dalim, Nur Chowdhury, Mosleh Uddin, respectively, in the list of freedom fighters on the website of the Ministry of Liberation War.
According to this, Jamuka will now send this decision to the Ministry of Liberation War and the ministry will then publish it in the form of a gazette.
A three-member committee has also been formed at the meeting to identify the other supporters of Bangabandhu's assassination.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Member of Parliament for Chattogram-1 constituency has been appointed as the convener of the committee.
The other two members are Former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and Md Abdus Shahid.
Commenting on the meeting, Liberation War Affairs Minister Mozammel Haque said that the certificates and honors of the four assassins of Bangabandhu who have been declared guilty in the court have been revoked.
"In the same meeting, Khandaker Mostaq, Ziaur Rahman and many others were named along with the documentary evidence involved in the assassination of Bangabandhu," he added.
The minister was speaking after attending the naming ceremony of important roads of Kaliakair municipality in the Chandra area of Gazipur as the chief guest.
He noted that Jamuka has formed a sub-committee to present data on those who were involved in the assassination of Bangabandhu with documentary evidence.
If found involved, their honourary titles will be revoked. "There are similar examples not only in Bangladesh but also abroad. These decisions are not for political reasons," he added.
The minister reiterated that Ziaur Rahman, Khandaker Mostaq, Mahbub Alam Chashi and many others have been named.
"Their roles and involvement in the assassination of Bangabandhu were discussed yesterday. The sub-committee will report within the next one month," Mozammel Haque noted.
