A youth was killed in a crude bomb explosion in the Moghbazar area of the capital this evening (24 December).
The incident occurred around 7:30pm in front of the Muktijoddha Sangsad near New Eskaton Road, when a crude bomb was hurled from the Moghbazar flyover and exploded on the ground below.
The deceased has been identified as Siam Majumder, 21, who was an employee at Zahid Car Decoration, a car decoration shop located beneath the flyover.
Confirming the incident, Hatirjheel Police Station Inspector (Operations) Md Mohiuddin told The Business Standard, "Police are currently at the scene. Further details will be shared later."
Kamran, the shop owner, said, "Siam had gone out to have tea when a crude bomb was hurled from the Moghbazar flyover, exploding on the ground below and killing him on the spot."
Later, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a statement said Siam was standing on the road in front of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad command council building at the time of the explosion.
Police rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information, recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The DMP said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible. Security measures, including checkpoints and patrols across the capital, have been intensified following the incident.
"Initially, it is believed that the blast appeared to be part of the banned Awami League's planned and sequential act of 'cocktail terrorism' aimed at creating fear and panic among the public," reads the statement.
The DMP urged to share any information related to the incident with the nearest police station or through the national emergency service 999.
Earlier, on 13 December, a series of crude bomb explosions were reported in different parts of the capital, leaving at least one person injured.
