From Westeros to Ctg: ‘Game of Thrones’-style banner of Jamaat chief sparks buzz in port city

A banner inspired by the popular television series "Game of Thrones," featuring Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, has appeared in parts of Chattogram city, sparking widespread discussion on social media.
The banner, spotted in the port city's Boropol and Chawkbazar areas, carries the popular line "Winter is coming" and shows Shafiqur holding a scale shaped like a sword. At the bottom of the banner, it reads, "Courtesy: Dadu Fan Club Chattogram."
The banner has gone viral online, drawing mixed reactions from netizens. However, Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders have denied any organisational involvement in putting it up.
Shafiqur is currently on a nationwide tour as part of election campaigning. As part of the programme, he is scheduled to arrive in Chattogram today (2 February) via Cox's Bazar.
During the visit, he is expected to address five public rallies in Cox's Bazar's Maheshkhali and Sadar upazilas, Lohagara's Paduya area, Sitakunda, and at the Port School and College ground in Chattogram city.
Asked about the banner, Zahidul Alam Joy, publicity and media secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir's Chattogram metropolitan south unit, told The Business Standard, "The images went viral on social media through several fan pages."
"Someone later printed the images and put them up as banners. The organisation has no connection with this. Fan pages of the Jamaat ameer have emerged, and they may have put up such banners out of excitement. I do not think these images carry any particular meaning," he said.
A search on social media for "Dadu Fan Club" shows numerous pages and groups where similar images are circulating online, with some users widely sharing them while others have criticised the move.
Contacted for comment, Morshedul Islam Chowdhury, assistant secretary of Chattogram city Jamaat, said he is not aware of the banner.
"There was no organisational decision to put up such a banner. We are looking into the matter," he said.
According to GameRant, a digital publication run by gamers, the opening scene of the "Game of Thrones" pilot introduces the concept of winter and the perilous world beyond the Wall through the appearance of the White Walkers.
The words of House Stark, "Winter is coming," serve as both an ominous warning and a reminder of the family's responsibility to protect the North during harsh winters.
The arrival of winter in Westeros signifies the restoration of House Stark's power, the forging of alliances to combat the Night King, and the necessity for the Stark family to stand united in defence of one another
