Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed has been removed from duty in connection with the detention of three students of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on charges of extortion in the capital's Uttara.

Besides, an investigation has been launched against the officer-in-charge (OC) of the same police station, Md Hafizur Rahman over the incident.

Rownak Zahan, deputy police commissioner, Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matters to The Business Standard at around 12:00am Tuesday (4 February).

The developments come in the face of demands from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement about actions against the SI and the OC for detaining three of their fellow classmates earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

The three students - Akash, Robin and Bappy - were later released following attacks and protests by members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

According to students and the police, the three were detained from a meeting of the student platform in Gausul Azam Avenue in Sector 13, Uttara. regarding the formation of a Uttara West Thana Unit.

"During the meeting, a team led by Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed arrested Akash, Robin and Bappi. They were later taken to Uttara East Police Station," one of the students familiar with the matter told TBS on condition of anonymity.

A group of the students later besieged the Uttara East Police Station demanding the release of the three detained.

"We found out that three were arrested by the Uttara West Police Station and kept in the custody of the Uttara East Police Station," the student added.

Later, the protesting students threw bricks and stones at the Uttara West Police Station. They also attacked the gate of the police station.

Some of the policemen were also reportedly beaten, according to sources.

The attack took place at around 7:00pm in the evening, DC Rownak confirmed to TBS earlier tonight.

Following a meeting between the students and the police after the attack, the detainees were released.
