July injured block Shahbag demanding full AL ban, improved medical care, July Charter implementation
The demonstrators stated that they would not accept what they termed a "drama" in the name of banning the party, but instead called for a permanent ban on the Awami League through legal means
Injured participants of the July Uprising blocked Shahbag intersection in the capital this morning (11 May), demanding a permanent ban on the Awami League, implementation of the July Charter, and lifelong medical care for those injured during the movement.
The protesters said they would not accept what they described as a "drama" in the name of banning the party. They called for a permanent ban through legal procedures.
They also demanded a formal announcement from the Ministry of Health ensuring continued and comprehensive treatment for the injured. The protesters vowed to remain on the streets until their demands are met.
Sumon, who was injured during the July movement, said, "I was admitted to Suhrawardy Medical College, and now I am on release. Along with the demand to ban the Awami League, our demand was to publish the July Charter. They accepted one demand and said they would do it within 30 days."
"They could not give the Charter in nine months, how can they do it in 30 days?" he said, adding, "The movement will continue until the demand is not met."
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbag Police Station, Khaled Munsur, told The Business Standard, "The protesters have taken up positions on the road. We are trying to remove them from there."
Notably, in an Advisory Council meeting held last night (10 May), the interim government decided to ban all activities of the Awami League, including its online operations, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, until the party and its leaders face trial. The council also resolved to finalise and publish the July Charter within 30 working days.
Protestors, initially led by the National Citizen Party and later joined by other political parties, have been demonstrating since Thursday (8 May), demanding a ban on the Awami League. The sit-in protest kept the Shahbag intersection blocked until late last night.
