Transport owners threaten nonstop strike in Bagura from 8 Mar

Transport owners and workers have threatened to enforce an indefinite strike in Bagura from 8 March if the case against  Bagura Motor Owners' Association general secretary is not withdrawn and attackers of Bogura bus terminal are not arrested.

Rafiqul Islam, acting president of the Rajshahi Divisional Transport Owners Workers Joint Committee, made the announcement on Saturday after a protest rally held on the issue of clashes and cases against transport owners and workers.

A clash ensued between supporters of two factions of the Bogura District Motor Owners Association over establishing supremacy on Tuesday.  Later, three cases were filed in connection with making 566 people accused, mentioning names of 91.

In the meeting, the leaders have decided,  "If the case against the general secretary of the Bagura Motor Owners' Association, Aminul Islam, is not withdrawn and  the accused in the attack on the Bogura bus terminal are not arrested and the additional deputy commissioner is removed, a non-stop transport strike will commence from 8 March."

The transport owners-workers' leaders, in the meeting, also demanded release of the detained workers and compensation for damaged cars, offices and motorcycles in the arson attack.

There has been a dispute between two factions of Bogura District Motor Owners Association, over controlling the association for the last three years.  The factions are led by Manjurul Alam Mohan, joint secretary of district Awami League, and Aminul Islam, former Panel Mayor of Bogura Municipality.

According to the sources, Akteruzzaman Duke was elected as the president and Aminul Islam as the general secretary of Bogura District Motor Owners Association in the election held three years ago. Since then, Manjurul Alam Mohan has been alleging that the election and its results are illegal.
