Traffic snarls on Dhaka-Aricha Highway amid BNP event in Savar
Traffic remained slow on both Dhaka- and Nabinagar-bound lanes from Ulail to Radio Colony, with police deploying extra personnel to manage the situation
Heavy traffic congestion was reported on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway from Ulail to Radio Colony in Savar on this afternoon (9 November) as local units of the BNP jointly organised a discussion meeting marking the historic 7 November.
The gridlock stretched for several kilometres, causing suffering for commuters and passengers.
As of writing this report at 4:30pm, traffic remained slow in the area, witnesses said.
Earlier in the day, several local units of the BNP and its affiliated bodies organised a discussion meeting at Tarapur field in Savar municipality to mark the historic 7 November.
The congestion began around 2:30pm when BNP leaders and activists from different areas started marching in processions toward the venue, blocking parts of the highway, according to police and eyewitnesses.
The discussion meeting, chaired by Savar municipal BNP President Khandakar Shah Mainul Hossain and conducted by General Secretary Md Badiuzzaman Bodi, was attended by Dr Dewan Salah Uddin, the party's assistant secretary for family welfare affairs and its nominated candidate for the upcoming national election, as the chief guest.
Contacted by The Business Standard, Dhaka District Traffic Police (North) Inspector (Administration) Md Golam Sarwar said, "From what I can see, traffic congestion has formed on the Dhaka-bound lane from Radio Colony to Pakiza due to the public rally. There is considerable pressure in that section. However, additional police have been deployed to manage the situation."
Meanwhile, a traffic officer stationed at the Savar Thana Stand area said the congestion caused by the rally extended beyond the Dhaka-bound lane, stretching from Pakiza to nearly Ulail on the Nabinagar-bound side as well.
