Police must swear never to be weaponised by fascists against people: PM
He noted that Pakistani occupation forces launched a brutal attack there under Operation Searchlight, killing hundreds of police personnel in the dead of night.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (10 May) called on members of the police to pledge that no authoritarian or fascist regime can ever again be able to use force against the country and its people.
Tarique made the call while inaugurating Police Week 2026 at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
Recalling the tragic events of 25 March 1971, during Bangladesh's Liberation War, the prime minister said Rajarbagh Police Lines remains a symbol of sacrifice and resistance.
He noted that Pakistani occupation forces launched a brutal attack there under Operation Searchlight, killing hundreds of police personnel in the dead of night.
Paying tribute to the fallen officers, he said the nation must not only remember their sacrifice but also remain committed to protecting the country's independence and democratic values.
"Standing on this historic ground, stained with the blood of police members who sacrificed their lives for independence, let us renew our pledge that no fascist or authoritarian force will ever again be able to use the police against the freedom of the country and its people," he said.
Referring to the political developments of 5 August 2024, Tarique said, students and citizens fought against what he described as a dangerous authoritarian regime, leading to a mass uprising and the establishment of the current elected government.
He also praised the role of police during the national election held in February, saying law enforcement agencies demonstrated professionalism in ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process.
"The role of the police will be even more important in the days ahead," he said.
The prime minister added, "The progress and stability of the country depend on their work. Ensuring public safety and security is now your greatest responsibility."
He commended the contributions of the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) both at home and abroad, particularly highlighting the performance of Bangladeshi police officers in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
"I salute those members of the police and RAB who are serving the country and society with dedication, intelligence, and professionalism. I hope they will continue to contribute even more in the future," he said.
