The deceased was identified as Md Samir (22), a resident of Halishahar in Chattogram and a refrigerator mechanic by profession.
Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Sushmoy Das said the incident occurred around 1pm at the Shaibal Point of Cox's Bazar sea beach.
According to police, Samir had arrived in Cox's Bazar earlier in the day with three of his friends. They checked in at a hotel named Classic Villa in the cottage zone and later went to Shaibal Point for bathing in the sea.
SI Sushmoy said, "Samir was swept away by a strong wave while bathing. No lifeguard was present in that part of the beach at the time.
