Woman protests at Narayanganj police station after cops 'refuse to record case' against BNP leader
The incident began on Sunday (26 October) when Irfan Mia, a litigant, went to court for a hearing and was allegedly attacked by Sakhawat’s junior lawyer and clerks
A woman staged a sit-in with her child in front of Fatullah Police Station yesterday (28 October), alleging that police refused to file a case because it named Narayanganj city BNP leader Sakhawat Hossain Khan as a prime accused.
According to the victim's family, the police insisted Sakhawat's name be dropped from the complaint and pressured them to file the case without him.
The incident began on Sunday (26 October) when Irfan Mia, a litigant, went to court for a hearing and was allegedly attacked by Sakhawat's junior lawyer and clerks. Irfan, his wife Razia Sultana, and their two sons were injured in the assault. A video of the attack, showing Razia being assaulted in front of her children, has since gone viral on social media.
Later that night, the family filed a written complaint naming Sakhawat and eight others, but police reportedly refused to register the case.
Razia said, "They told us to remove his name. How can we? He's the one who ordered the attack. Now we're hearing they're preparing a counter case against us."
After being refused, Razia sat with her child at the station gate around 2am yesterday, crying, "The SP, Circle SP, OC — none of them took my case. There's no justice here."
Dhiman Saha Jewel, district president of Citizens for Good Governance (Shujan), condemned the incident, calling it "a dangerous precedent."
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Jashim Uddin later said, "The case will be filed tonight. Two complaints were lodged over the same incident, so we were verifying the details. We will proceed with the case and investigation, the rest will come out after the investigation."
