Cattle seller beaten to death in Ashulia
A 50-year-old local businessman was beaten to death at a cattle market in Ashulia last night (26 May) after attempting to save his nephew from an assault allegedly by men from the market authorities' side.
The deceased was identified as Shahidullah Kaiser, who ran a medicine business in his local area.
The incident took place at the Paragram sacrificial animal market in the Shimulia union of Ashulia, confirmed Dhamrai Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kazi Rezaul.
He stated that the victim's body has been recovered from the hospital, legal procedures are underway, and the Ashulia Police Station has been formally notified since the crime scene falls under their jurisdiction.
According to witnesses and relatives, Shahidullah had arrived at the Paragram market last Thursday alongside his brother, Masud Rana, and nephew, Firoz Kabir, with 18 cows and two goats.
Having successfully sold 14 cows and both goats, the traders were staying at the venue to sell their remaining four cattle.
The conflict erupted when another individual attempted to tie a cow in the space allocated to Shahidullah's family.
When Shahidullah protested, the individual complained to the market authorities' men, who rushed to the spot and attacked Firoz Kabir.
As a clash broke out between both parties, Shahidullah intervened to rescue his nephew, only to be severely beaten.
He was rescued from the scene in a critical condition and rushed to the nearby Dhamrai 50-bed Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctors declared him dead.
Firoz Kabir, who witnessed the incident, said, "I went to the market with my uncle to sell cattle. Of my uncle's 18 cows, four were left to be sold. We were waiting to sell those. At that time, another man came and tried to tie a cow in the same spot. When we objected, an altercation ensued."
He further added, "At one stage, when my uncle Shahidullah protested, some people from among the market authorities and a few others nearby attacked us. When Shahidullah uncle tried to save me, they beat him mercilessly."
"During the attack, my other uncle had Tk40,000 with him from selling goats. The attackers took that money as well," he alleged.
