A team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) and National Security Intelligence (NSI) today (28 August) detained a passenger along with gold bars worth over Tk16.36 crore from juice-making machines at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

"On a tip-off, around 9:00am, the team searched a flight BG-252 coming from Sharjah of United Arab Emirates and seized the gold from the passenger and subsequently detained him," the airport Director Hafiz Ahmed said in a press conference.

The detainee has been identified as Hossain Ahmed, 20, son of Nurul Islam of Goramarakandi village of Goainghat upazila of the district.

"The passenger had managed to bypass the customs intelligence officials and reach the parking lot through the green channel. However, on suspicion, the airport's security officers and NSI took him back to the green channel.

"Upon searching his two luggage, 105 gold bars and four small gold discs were recovered from four juice-making machines," the airport director added.
