Sust expels 25 students over ragging allegations
Authorities said they would not be eligible for hall seats in the future, even though they do not currently reside there

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in Sylhet has expelled 25 students from the Economics and Statistics departments for involvement in ragging.
One student has been expelled for life, while the others face varying terms of expulsion.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Shajedul Karim confirmed the decision today (30 September), stating it was taken at the university's 237th Syndicate meeting held last Thursday (25 September).
The administration expelled Economics Department student Fahim Muntashir for life last year after finding him guilty of mentally torturing students at a mess.
From the same department, Junaid Mustafiz Ayon was expelled for four semesters, while Sharifuzzaman Khan Atif, Sabid Abrar Tajim, Anik Ahamed, Pritam Saha, Suel Rana, Zubair Hossain Talukdar Zim, Md Naim Mia, Bikash Chandra Dhar, and Mia Mohammad Saiyedul Bashar Rifat were expelled for two semesters each.
In the Statistics Department, five female students from the previous academic year were punished for ragging 15 female students of the 2023–24 session near the university's Shaheed Minar on 27 November last year.
Among them, Kazi Tasmiha Haque Orisha was expelled for four semesters, while Farzana Mehrun Nuhha, Tasmiyah Alam Maisha, Lamia Ismail Jui, and Sraboni Dey Priya were permanently barred from residential halls.
Authorities said they would not be eligible for hall seats in the future, even though they do not currently reside there.
All five have also been directed to provide written undertakings to the proctorial body pledging not to engage in ragging.
Two second-year Statistics students, Md Sagor Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain, were expelled for two semesters over allegations of ragging underclassmen in a mess near the university's main gate on 14 November last year.
In addition, six more Statistics students—Shivraj Tripura, Zubair Abdullah, Riyadus Salehin Riyan, Tanmoy Karmakar Sagor, Yazuddin Patwari, and Nafis Imtiaz Ruhan—were permanently expelled from residential halls, with recommendations that no seats be allocated to them in the future.
