A suspected mugger was beaten to death and two others were injured by an angry mob in the capital's Swarighat area early today (21 March) morning.
The incident took place around 5am, police said.
The deceased was identified as Md Asif, 19, son of Md Jahir from Kamrangirchar in Dhaka. However, the identities of the two injured could not be confirmed immediately.
Inspector Abul Khair of Chawkbazar police station said, "The incident took place at Jinjira Ghat in Keraniganj. Locals chased three individuals when they attempted to commit a mugging there."
"One of them was caught by the mob, while the other two jumped into the river. They swam across and reached the Champatoli Ghat area in Old Dhaka's Swarighat, where they were caught and beaten by locals," he added.
The three were rescued and taken to Mitford Hospital for treatment. As their conditions worsened, they were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 7:30am.
"Doctors at DMCH examined them and declared one of them dead, while the other two are currently undergoing treatment under police watch," the inspector further said.
