A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage, showing a machete-wielding man casually walking past on-duty traffic police moments after mugging someone near Dhanmondi 32 in the capital.
The footage, shared in the Facebook group "Traffic Alert," shows a man, carrying machete in his hand, forcefully snatching a bag from a pedestrian before walking away undisturbed, even as two traffic policemen stand nearby.
Speaking to The Business Standard today (18 July), Rakib Hossain, who filmed the incident, said the incident took place near the Dhanmondi 32 lake area last night.
Describing the incident, Rakib said, "I was stuck in traffic for a while and noticed that the muggers were working in a team. They pretended to clash among themselves, creating confusion, and then targeted passersby. When someone tried to intervene, they [muggers] attacked and robbed him."
When contacted, Assistant Police Commissioner (Dhanmondi Zone) of Ramna Division, Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman told TBS, "A police team responded immediately after receiving the news from pedestrians and searched the entire area, but neither the victim nor the armed individual could be found."
The officer added, "Later, police collected CCTV footage. We will thoroughly investigate the matter and take necessary steps."
