Suspected Indian smuggler injured in BGB firing at Moulvibazar border
The injured man and his accomplice fled across the border into India, the BGB says.
A suspected Indian smuggler was injured after members of the Border Guard Bangladesh opened fire when he and his accomplice
allegedly attempted to attack a BGB patrol team at the Barlekha border in Moulvibazar last night (13 June).
The identity of the injured person could not be immediately known.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Ataur Rahman Sujan, commanding officer of the Beanibazar battalion (52 BGB), said intelligence inquiries and other legal procedures are underway.
According to the BGB, a patrol team from the battalion was conducting routine patrols in the Barlekha border area last night when they challenged two suspected Indian smugglers.
The suspects allegedly attempted to attack the BGB personnel with sharp weapons.
In self-defence and to bring the situation under control, the patrol members opened fire, injuring one of the suspects.
The injured man and his accomplice then fled across the border into India, the BGB said.
BGB official Ataur said the force remains committed to preventing smuggling and maintaining law and order along the border.
