A Dhaka court today (12 September) placed six leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations on a two-day remand each in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, after they were accused of chanting anti-government slogans during a procession in Mirpur's Paikpara area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing.
The accused are — Jewel Rana (35), former vice-chairman of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna and a Jubo League leader; Al Noman Saif (29), former assistant general secretary of Chattogram Islamia College Students' Union and a Chhatra League activist; Jubo League activist Julhas (26); Chhatra League activist Imon Hossain Khan Manik; and Awami League activists Sagar Hossain (27) and Ohidul Islam Suman (33).
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Jalal Uddin of Mirpur Police Station produced the accused before the court seeking five days of remand.
He told the court that the accused were active supporters of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League and, in collusion with others, allegedly attempted to destabilise public order by organising an unauthorised procession and chanting anti-government slogans.
According to the case statement, on 11 September, around 30 to 40 activists of Awami League and Chhatra League gathered near Gate-1 of G-Type Staff Quarters in Paikpara, wearing masks, and shouted anti-government slogans.
