Joint forces have arrested three people along with weapons and ammunition during an operation in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. Those arrested are listed criminal Galib Imtiaz, also known as Nahid, 42, and his two associates—Rabiul Islam, also known as Babu or Machine Babu, 31, and Masud Rana Alvi, also known as "Shooter" Masud.
The joint forces, led by the army, carried out the operation in the Chapain area of Savar in the early hours of yesterday (February 9) and arrested them. During the operation, the forces recovered three foreign-made pistols, four magazines, 20 rounds of ammunition, six shotgun cartridges, seven machetes (ramda), and six samurai swords.
The information was disclosed at a press conference held at the Mohammadpur Bosila Army Camp in the afternoon by Lieutenant Colonel Nazim Ahmed, commanding officer of the Army's 23 East Bengal Regiment.
He said the arrests were made in Savar based on information provided by suspects detained in recent days during army operations, leading to the capture of listed criminals and drug dealers. A large cache of firearms and locally made weapons was recovered from them. Another associate, Swapan Sheikh, managed to flee before the operation. Swapan and Nahid were involved in selling various locally made and foreign weapons.
When asked about the political affiliations of the arrested individuals, he said, "We did not arrest them as members of any political party. We arrested them as terrorists, arms dealers, and armed criminals."
He added that efforts would continue to ensure that no one can create unrest by using illegal weapons ahead of the elections.
